Jul 23rd, 2020 by Autism Knows No Borders
Discover what’s possible when communication operates beyond words.
Jeannette Washington is a certified teacher, speech pathologist, and coder. She is also the author of Technical Difficulties: Why Dyslexic Narratives Matter in Tech.
Jeannette partners with companies, like Microsoft, to help them weave inclusion into their identities.
In today’s episode, Jeannette describes what speech therapy is, who can benefit from it, and how it is sometimes misunderstood.
With many years of experience providing services to people with autism, ADHD, and dyslexia, Jeannette discusses how autism and dyslexia overlap and why she thinks that differently-minded individuals can – and should – contribute to the tech industry.
Jeannette also explains what an AAC device is, and offers advice for parents who are trying to assist their children in increasing their communication skills.
I’d like to give a shout out to one of our listeners, Kelly Cotter, for contributing to today’s interview with a question regarding collaboration between speech therapists and behavior analysts.
